This year signals a new phase in my practice; a loosening up and a change of pace. An increased awareness of tools and materials, of continuous movement, acting without thinking, forgetting instead of remembering. Cutting, arranging, placing, sticking, drawing, painting. Back to basics. Its difficult not to refer to this activity as ‘mapping’ because the results seem always to resemble a diagram. A diagram is an abstract and universally recognized pictorial way of delivering detailed information or instructions. It conveys not only the essence of true meaning but hints at much more. A personal definition of this activity is that it is a kind of choreographed cartography that is an arrangement of  simple shapes, that builds an abstract narrative in the plan view. In the end experience, emotion and sensation, are gradually compressed into the format of a colour coded map. The best looked for outcome is a configuration that stops your mind working, because you don’t know what to think. You can only feel.
